The History of Sizing, Inch by Inch

“You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you have been.” — Maya Angelou Sizing and fashion go hand in hand and evolve over time. Here are some of the key milestones the industry has seen throughout the years.

1350

Fitted garments were unavailable before 1350, forcing people to wear loose robes instead. According to archeological records, during this year, clothing became more form-fitting, and merchants produced ready-to-wear garments and accessories.

1800

Mass production of ready-to-wear military uniforms planted the seed for what would later become a domestic market. The early size range was based mainly on chest measurements.

1940

Sizing standards begin to form, and measurements are no longer based solely on age. This advancement could be tied to research performed a year earlier, which studied women’s measurements across the US for garment fitting data.

1951

The Clothing Industry Development Council introduced the first body measurement standard as part of the post-war industrial recovery efforts. Measurement specialists traveled across the country to spread the word among retailers, factories, and schools.

1958

The adoption of new, voluntary commercial sizing standards began. The measuring system, ranging from size 8 to 38, was flawed and focused only on hourglass body-shaped women, covering about 8% of the market.

1966

Germany introduced measurements for men and boys that included 88 commercial sizes based on recommendations by the European Association of Clothing Industries.

1970

Commercial standards were updated to reflect a more accurate picture of current fashion and popular needs. These became voluntary for manufacturers to adopt. In the UK, labeling systems for children were first introduced.

1982

A failed attempt to apply a more flexible measurement system based on four-centimeter intervals was made. Retailers and customers did not embrace the suggested method and continued using inches.

1983

The US Department of Commerce announced the formal withdrawal of previously accepted women’s sizing standards, leaving a void that took years to reestablish.

1995

New voluntary sizing standards were created by a private organization called the American Society for Testing and Materials.

1996

Alpha-based sizing is developed to simplify production and fitting by offering fewer sizes for manufacturing and international commerce. This system proved popular with male shoppers.

2019

Sizer is launched with the mission of transforming sizing as we know it and offering advanced technology solutions for businesses and customers alike.
